Digital Texts and What the Future Holds

After reading the articles for this week, it is clear that our society is moving towards digital texts online in hopes of accommodating everyone. According to the readings digital texts and books will go hand and hand for quite some time, therefore libraries and such will always exist however the amount of literature available online will continue to grow. I feel that there are ups and downs to digital texts. I agree and see proof in the readings that for students who are unable to read having texts online allows them to have them read out loud to them therefore causing them not to fall as far behind. Also with digital text those who have physical disabilities and may not be able to read a book by holding it in their hand are still able to read. However moving to completely digital text with no form of actual books I do not see as a good idea because there are those like myself that find it very hard to read online and like to have physical copies in front of them while they read. Therefore I do see the numerous benefits that digital texts can hold making it possible for those who are unable to read to be able to comprehend and follow in class and I also see that it helps those who are unable to hold books but I feel that it is important to keep libraries and physical copies of books around because there is something that can be learned about going to a library and checking out books and what not. This is history and this history should not be lost.

  1. I understand the need to hold things in your hand when you read. I appreciate that and am glad you see both the benefits and the drawbacks to using digital texts. As teachers we need to keep an open mind when it comes to using technology so we may better meet the needs of all our students.
