The Online Class

I thought the experience we had last week where we had an online class was very useful. I particularly liked that different people could chime in whenever they wanted as long as they had a microphone. I thought it was also an interesting experience to be sitting in the classroom with Sara while this activity was going on because she would say things to us that she did not use the microphone to say to everyone else involved. The website allowed us to use all sorts of different techniques to and learn about different tools to use with our students and it was just an interesting experience overall in which I was able to stay much more focused then I usually am in the lab and the 3 hour class.

  1. That these technologies - when used in an integrated way - can actually be MORE engaging than the traditional classroom is fascinating, isn't it? I really liked that we also had the "hybrid" situation available. That created real choice.

  2. I liked the online class also, because although it was online, it still provided us with the same opportunities to participate as we have when we hold class on campus. When we are on campus, we use Today's Meet. When we are on campus, if we don't feel like speaking out loud, we can use Today's Meet to type our thoughts, and while Ira is lecturing, Sara can respond. If we hold class online, you can talk out loud using your microphone, however, if you don't have a working microphone, don't feel like talking, or can't get it to work, there is also a chat box similar to Today's Meet where we can type our thoughts as well.

I agree with what both you and Ira mentioned--I was much more engaged when we held class online as well because I was playing with the features the online class had. I also was fascinated by the ability to hear each of the students that used their microphones to talk as if we were actually in class. In addition, Ira posted our powerpoint in the "classroom," and we were able to see both him and his lecture materials. Overall, I agree, the online class was much more engaging an interesting, and I liked it a lot as well.

  3. I agree I really liked the online class we had. I was apprehensive about it at first but once we got started and Ira showed us around it was very interesting. This would be awesome for students who may have emotional issues and for some reason cannot come to class one day, they dont fall behind and can still participate. I also agree with Ira having the hybrid available. Different students learn different ways and it is good to have options.

  4. I agree--I felt that the structure of the online class helped me to more actively participate in the discussion, and I was more motivated to voice my thoughts, ideas, opinions, and experiences when called upon to do so. Although I personally feel more comfortable attending class in person, our online class demonstrates the effectiveness of offering students with varying mediums through which they can learn.

  5. I liked that we got to experience an online class during this course. Previously, I had taken classes online through MSU where you read the powerpoints, the book, and maybe watch prerecorded lectures. That way of online class is very impersonal. The online class that we experienced in this class was much more personal. I liked that everyone was able to participate and ask questions. I still prefer attending class in person, I feel that this way to do an online class is a lot more beneficial than the standard way of doing it.

  6. I liked the online class, but I would not want to do something like that very often. It is really convenient when you just want to stay at home or when the weather is bad, but I, like many students, need to be in a classroom in order to stay focused. Online classes give me too much freedom. I need a little more structure.

This structure, however, is probably great for students who have communication issues. They dont have to be face-to-face with others.
